Dwarfed by duty

In our series on the Confederations Cup coaches, football writer Mazola Molefe profiles Brazilian coach Carlos Caetano Bledorn Verri, better known as Dunga

GAME ON: Carlos Caetano Bledorn Verri (Dunga),
who on Thursday is expected to announce his 23-man squad to defend the
Confed Cup title they won in Germany in 2005

Since he was appointed coach, Dunga has yet to deliver.

Carlos Caetano Bledorn Verri was given the nickname Dunga by his uncle, who thought he would never grow tall.

The nickname is Portuguese for one of Snow White’s dwarfs. Dunga proved his uncle wrong, but the name stuck. Since he was appointed coach of Brazil, however, Dunga has yet to deliver.

He could have coached soon after retiring from the game in 2000, but he refused the offer to replace Vanderlei Luxemburgo.

The reason for the rejection at the time was that Dunga did not like the way the Brazilian football federation conducted its affairs.

He appears to have changed his mind six years later. He was appointed coach to take over from Carlos Alberto Parreira, who had resigned after being criticised by the Brazilian media and public for playing what they regarded as outdated football.

The former Sport Club Internacional midfielder was appointed coach of Brazil in July 2006 — a month after the World Cup was held in Germany.

Dunga will be the only coach at the Confed Cup who has no prior coaching experience at professional level. He has at least led his men to the 2007 Copa America title, which cemented a place for them in the Confed Cup.

Just as he was a no-nonsense player, constantly getting into squabbles with team-mate Bebeto, Dunga wants to lay a new foundation in the national team. He has focused on treating players as equals instead of admiring them because of the big clubs they play for — namely AC Milan, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

He has also roped in players such as Daniel Carvalho (CSKA Moscow), Elano (Manchester City) and Dudu Cearense (Olympiakos). Carvalho has scored twice for Brazil in four games, one of them being on debut.

Of the Brazil national team players who played in the 2006 World Cup, Dunga has thus far selected only Ronaldinho, Kaka and Adriano — opting for Luis Fabiano to bang in the goals.

Brazilians are expected to be shocked when Dunga announces his squad for the World Cup qualifiers with Uruguay and Paraguay and the Confederations Cup. Clubs such as Sao Paulo, Cruzeiro and Internacional have been busy lobbying against multiple call-ups from their ranks ahead of the decisive stages of the Brazilian Cup competitions in the coming month.

Leading players in Europe may also indicate their desire to sit out the South African trip, though not as strenuously as Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Kaka have done in recent years. Their attitudes caused strife with Brazil’s management team.

Ronaldo’s unwillingness to play in the 2005 Confederations Cup saw him dropped for the World Cup qualifiers, while Kaka and Ronaldinho were temporarily not welcomed by Dunga, who benched the pair after their insistence on missing the 2007 Copa America.

On May 21, the 45-year-old Dunga is expected to announce his 23-man Confed Cup squad to defend the title they won in Germany in 2005. He has declared that the door is open for consistent performers like Ronaldo, who plays for Corinthians in the Brazilian league.

E não é que o Dunga convoca 2 titulares absolutos do Inter ... desfalcando o time na reta final da Copa do Brasil???? Eu sou fã do Dunga. Nilmar e Alexandre Pato.

Parabéns ao Nilmar e ao Kléber! Boa sorte para o Dunga!
